Item Prep

The following guidelines will help you prepare your items for the sale:

CLOTHING We only accept quality new and gently-used clothing. The better your clothing looks, the better it will sell! Please take time to wash and iron your clothes. Please check for stains, tears, holes, fading, broken zippers, frayed hemlines, missing buttons, etc. When checking for stains it is best to use fluorescent lighting. Freshly laundered and ironed items always sell better. Remember appearance is everything! We will be inspecting items at check-in and will not accept any item that is not in excellent condition. Please do not use the mini gold safety pins as they break easily. ABSOLUTELY NO CLOTHING ITEMS WILL BE ACCEPTED THAT HAVE ANY FOUL ODORS!

SHOES should be in first class condition (not badly scuffed or dirty). Please make sure your pair of shoes is either tied together or attached together so that the tag can be securely attached. You may also place your shoes in a clear plastic bag. Attach the tag with clear packing tape to the outside of the bag. We will not accept shoes that are not attached together securely with the tag attached. No shoe boxes please!

BLANKETS Fold blankets into a square.  For smaller blankets, place in a clear bag or pin all 4 corners together.  For larger blankets/comforters, tie with string or ribbon around both sides to keep secure.  Be prepared to open up all blankets at check-in so they can be checked for cleanliness. Attach the tag with safety pins or packing tape.

LOOSE ITEMS Sets of measuring cups, utensils, gloves, etc. should be grouped together appropriately in Ziploc bags. Seal with clear packing tape. Tape tag to bag.

TOYS Toys & games etc. MUST HAVE ALL PIECES, be clean and not out of date. Attach small pieces by putting them in a Ziploc bag and taping bag shut. Then securely tape bag to larger item. All items that require batteries should have them. No one wants to buy a toy if they cannot test it first. If parts get separated it will not sell. Games should be taped closed. Puzzles and small toys should be grouped accordingly and put in Ziploc bags. Secure with clear packing tape and tape tag to the Ziploc bag. TOYS NOT PACKAGED APPROPRIATELY WILL BE TURNED AWAY.

BOOKS Groups of books should be placed in Ziploc bags or tied together with string/ribbon for sale together with tag attached to the outside.  Single books can be tagged on the back of the book or inside cover.  Look for the best spot so when removing the tag, the book does not tear.  No books will be accepted with ripped or badly destroyed pages.

CD's/ DVD's/VIDEOS Groups of CD's, DVD's or videos (must have the correct cover) can be put in a Ziploc bag or tied together with string/ribbon with the tag attached to the outside.  Single CD's, DVD's or videos (with cover) can have the tags taped to the outside.

CAR SEATS For legal reasons, we cannot accept!

FURNITURE Furniture must be in excellent condition.  Minor scratches will be accepted but no damage that affects the integrity of the item.  All fabric must not have any stains, tears, pulls or foul odors.  All furniture must be set up on the sales floor by the consignor during drop-off and also broken down at pick-up.  We DO NOT accept mattresses, box springs or bed frames, but will take bed frames attached to a head/foot board.

ELECTRONICS All electronic equipment must be clean and working.  All electronics must have working batteries and will be tested and will be turned away if they cannot be proven to work correctly.

APPLIANCES You must be able to prove that your appliances work in order for them to be accepted at the sale.  If it is found that a consignor's appliance does not work properly, the consignor will no longer be able to consign appliances at future sales.

TOOLS Tools will be inspected for working condition and cleanliness. If it is found that a consignor's tools do not work properly, the consignor will no longer be able to consign tools at future sales.

Tagging your items

Tags will need to be printed on 60LB OR HEAVIER WHITE CARD STOCK using one of our tag makers (Tag maker for Excel version xls or Tag maker for Excel version XLSX). Anything that is lightweight rips easily and runs the risk of getting lost during the sale. There will be a lost and found at the sale for any items that get separated from their tags during the sale.

Tip - Entering Inventory

To make tagging at home a breeze, follow these simple steps:
  • Hang all clothing on hangers with the hanger hook facing left so that it looks like a question mark (?). Pants should be SAFETY PINNED to the top part of the hanger. Two piece outfits should have the pants attached to the back of the shirt and pinned at the shoulders (both pieces can be viewed without unpinning the garment) OR hang the second item on another hanger and attach together near the hook with elastic band. Never hide the second half under the first. Pants/shorts/skirts should be hung on the upper part of the hanger with the pins close to the hook so they won't slide to the bottom part (otherwise they bunch up and people won't buy them). Do not fold pants over hanger. Please ensure that all buttons are buttoned, all snaps are snapped and all zippers are zipped.
  • Gather all other items you are consigning and make sure they are properly cleaned.  A little soap and water goes a long way.
  • Open our tag maker for Excel xls or tag maker for Excel xlsx and fill in all items you are consigning on the inventory list.
  • Please include sizes for all clothing and shoe items.  Items without sizing information will not be accepted!
  • Item Description - Enter a short description of your item. This is a good way to point out if your item is a brand name. If you have the time, this is also a good place to add any positive selling points, such as "Washes Well!" or "Only Worn Once." Be careful to avoid negatives such as "Never Worn." Use "NEW" or "Like New!" instead. On large ticket items such as equipment, you may want to put the retail price so buyers will know what a good deal they are getting.
  • DISCOUNT - If you would like your item to be discounted during the half price hour, mark YES in the half price box. If this box is blank, your items will not sell for half price.
  • DONATE - If you would like the item automatically donated if it does NOT sell, please type the word YES into the "Donate?" space on the item inventory.  If you will be picking up your items, please leave this space blank.
  • PRICE - Price must be listed in $0.50 increments only. Minimum price is $1.00. If an item is less than the minimum, group it with something else to meet the minimum price.
  • Once you finish with the inventory sheet, click on the "tag" button at the bottom and view and print all of your tags.  When you are sure you have all of your items entered, email the inventory sheet to info@hhconsign.com.  This is required before you come to your check-in appointment.
  • Once you print your tags cut them out.
  • Attach the tag to the upper right-front corner (when you are facing the item) of the garment with a 1” or larger safety pin. Items that are a set only require 1 tag. DO NOT use stickpins, staples or clothespins.  All other items can have the tag attached with clear packing tape, zip tie or any other means that will securely fasten the tag to the item.
  • RULE OF THUMB: When in doubt... leave it out. If you don’t feel good about an item or feel it is something that you would not purchase then do not put it in the sale. The quality of our sale is important to us.
  • QUALITY CONTROL: We will be screening items very closely at drop off to maintain the quality of the sale. Use good judgment when deciding what to bring to the sale. Please do not be offended if we ask you to take back some of your items. It is often easy to miss a spot or tear when you are getting your items ready at home. We want to be known for having the best quality merchandise and we want you as the purchaser to have confidence that you are buying the best at Home & Hearth Consignment!
